Low boiler pressure is a common reason for heating and hot water problems, especially with combi boilers. The good news is that a gentle pressure drop is often simple to put right if you follow safe steps and know when to stop and call a professional.

What normal combi boiler pressure means

Your combi boiler’s pressure is usually shown on a small gauge on the front of the boiler or underneath the case. It may be a traditional dial with red and green zones, or a digital display on newer models.

Many boilers run around 1.0 to 1.5 bar when cold, and slightly higher when hot. However, different manufacturers use different “normal” ranges, so always check your boiler manual or the manufacturer’s website for your exact model.

If the needle is well below the recommended “cold” range, the boiler may lock out or show an error code. If it is in the red high-pressure zone, you should not add any more water and should speak to a Gas Safe engineer.

Common reasons boiler pressure drops

A small, gradual pressure drop over several months is not unusual in sealed heating systems. It simply means a little water has been lost and needs topping up.

Typical everyday causes include:

  • Recently bled radiators: When you bleed your radiators to release trapped air, a small amount of water escapes along with the air. This can cause a noticeable drop in boiler pressure, especially if you have multiple radiators or have bled them frequently. It’s important to check the pressure after bleeding and top up if needed to keep the system running efficiently. Very small system leaks: Even tiny leaks in radiator valves, pipe joints, or towel rails can gradually reduce boiler pressure over time. These micro leaks are often hard to spot because they may only produce slight damp patches or rust. Regularly inspect vulnerable areas and listen for any hissing sounds that could indicate escaping water or air. Pressure relief valve discharge: The pressure relief valve acts as a safety feature to prevent excessive pressure build-up. If your system pressure has been too high recently, the valve may have opened to release water through the discharge pipe. This release can lower your boiler pressure noticeably. It’s a sign to check your system settings and ensure pressure stays within the recommended range to avoid repeated valve activation.

If the pressure drops quickly, over hours or days, or you need to keep topping up, that is no longer normal and needs proper investigation.

When you should not try to repressurise yourself

It is sensible to stop and call a Gas Safe registered engineer if you notice any of the following. Continuing to top up could hide a more serious issue.

Avoid DIY if:

• You can see visible leaks on pipework, radiators, under the boiler, or from the copper pipe that terminates outside (the pressure relief discharge pipe).

• Pressure drops very quickly again within hours or a day after topping up.

• The boiler shows repeated error codes related to pressure, or keeps locking out even after repressurising.

• You smell gas or burning around the boiler or gas pipework. Turn the boiler off, do not attempt repairs, and follow gas safety guidance immediately.

In any of these situations, do not keep adding water. The system needs a professional inspection.

How to repressurise using an external braided filling loop

Many homes have a silver flexible braided hose (filling loop) under the boiler or near the pipework. It usually connects between the cold mains water pipe and the heating system pipe and has one or two small black or blue handles.

Always check your boiler manual first, then follow these general steps:

  1. Turn the boiler off and let it cool so the system is not hot and under extra pressure.

  2. Check the filling loop is securely connected at both ends, with the valves closed (handles at 90 degrees to the pipe).

  3. Watch the pressure gauge as you slowly open the first valve, then gently open the second valve.

  4. Let the pressure rise gradually to the recommended cold pressure for your model, usually around the middle of the green zone.

  5. Close both valves fully as soon as the gauge reaches the correct level, and double check the handles are firmly shut.

  6. Turn the boiler back on and reset it if required, then check radiators are heating evenly.

Never leave the filling loop valves open, and never walk away while topping up. Overfilling can cause damage or force the safety valve to discharge.

How to repressurise internal keyless or filling-key systems

Many modern combi boilers have a built-in filling mechanism instead of an external flexible hose. The design varies by brand, but the principle is similar: controlled mains water is added into the heating circuit through a designated valve or key system.

Keyless internal filling controls

Some boilers have a small lever or plastic tap underneath the boiler, often marked with a water symbol. With the boiler off and cool, you usually:

Gently pull or twist the lever while watching the pressure gauge rise, then return it fully to the original position as soon as the correct pressure is reached. Always listen for the sound of water flow stopping to confirm it is closed.
